Meeting the Goal

“There should be a continual flow of funds to the national treasury of the National Spiritual Assembly, if that body wishes to properly administer the manifold and ever-increasing activities of the Faith. Every Bahá’í, no matter how poor, must realize what a grave responsibility he has to shoulder in this connection, and should have confidence that his spiritual progress as a believer in the World Order of Bahá’u’lláh will largely depend upon the measure in which he proves, in deeds, his readiness to support materially the divine institutions of His Faith.”

-From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi, July 17, 1937

Generally, goals are set to accomplish a task or address a need within a specific framework. The accomplishment of the goal can also reveal what is possible for those who are striving to accomplish its aims. For the Bahá’í community, meeting a goal can be confirming in practical and spiritual ways. For example, meeting the numerical teaching goals enables the community to learn how it can effectively connect many hearts to the work of transforming neighborhoods and villages across the globe. Using their various capacities and opportunities, friends and neighbors are able to create spiritually transformative and nurturing spaces that are born from the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh. Overall, through the teaching goals, we begin to see glimmerings of a future civilization, where love is the motivating force for all actions.

In that connection, the Fund goals of the Faith give the Bahá’í community a sense of what it looks like when those loving hearts combine their varying monetary contributions to provide material support for building that civilization. As implied in the quote from the Guardian, through financial contributions, we enable the institutions of Bahá’u’lláh to effectively address the needs of that civilization - removing obstacles that might otherwise hinder progress. In a greater sense, accomplishing the goals set by our institutions reveals how we can actually bring to a tangible reality the brilliant promise of Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation.
