Treasurers Notes for the Feast of Mulk/Dominion

The Fund and the Purpose of Life

Earth_image We know that teaching, the fundamental focus of the Five Year Plan, must also include Fund Education for old and new believers. Through the examination of the following three excerpts, treasurers can deepen with their community by engaging with them in a meditation that examines the links between the purpose of this life, the Laws of Baha’u’llah and the sacred duty to contribute to the Fund. The friends will then be further prepared to give firesides, make home visits and share their understanding of the sacred duty of contributing to the Fund and the impact it has on our personal and collective progress.

Quotation #1 reflects on the purpose of life, spiritual advancement and obedience to the Laws of Baha’u’llah.  Quotation #2 determines that contributing to the Fund is a spiritual obligation, and quotation #3 speaks of the service to humanity through contributions to the Fund.

Quotation #1 - "In considering the effect of obedience to the laws on individual lives, one must remember that the purpose of this life is to prepare the soul for the next…  Life in this world is a succession of tests and achievements, of falling short and of making new spiritual advances. Sometimes the course may seem very hard, but one can witness, again and again, that the soul who steadfastly obeys the Law of Baha'u'llah, however hard it may seem, grows spiritually…."

(Universal House of Justice, letter dated 6 February 1973, to all National Spiritual Assemblies)

Quotation #2 - “Beyond this there is, we believe, a worldwide need for appreciation of this basic principle of our Faith: that contributing to the Fund should constitute an integral part of the spiritual life of every Baha'i and be regarded as the fulfillment of a fundamental spiritual obligation.  In the Kitab-i-Aqdas, Baha'u'llah more than once refers to the necessity for combining spiritual and material means in achieving the purposes of the Faith. Shoghi Effendi, for his part, referred to the Fund as the lifeblood of the Cause.”

(The Universal House of Justice, A Wider Horizon, Selected Letters 1983-1992, p. 94)

Quotation #3 - “...our contributions to the Faith are the surest way of lifting once and for all time the burden of hunger and misery from mankind, for it is only through the system of Baha'u'llah -- Divine in origin -- that the world can be gotten on its feet and want, fear, hunger, war, etc., be eliminated.”

(From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer, December 8, 1947)
