Working to Bridge the Gap
There is no doubt the world has come a long way towards the equality of men and women. In our country in particular the days in which a woman was not allowed to vote or was expected to stay at home may seem a distant memory. But does that mean there is no more room for improvement? Abdu’l-Baha says that “the happiness of mankind will be realized when women and men coordinate and advance equally, for each is the complement and helpmeet of the other.” Blatant signs of inequality may be a thing of the past in our country but we continue to strive towards equality and the happiness of mankind.

As a young generation we may sometimes forget the huge advancements that women have made in such a short time. However, it is up to us to remember these efforts and to continue the work in changing the minds and hearts of our fellow human beings, promoting gender equality in school, in the workplace and in our community and even at home. Therefore, as we begin to raise our own families, let us focus on the education of our children for we now know that “women shall receive an equal privilege of education. This will enable them to qualify and progress in all degrees of occupation and accomplishment. For the world of humanity possesses two wings: man and woman. If one wing remains incapable and defective, it will restrict the power of the other, and full flight will be impossible. Therefore, the completeness and perfection of the human world are dependent upon the equal development of these two wings.”
